Etymology

Le Bazaneix, or Basanet, is derived from the word Basana, a word also found in the old provencal language, which means 'lining'. This term originates from the Arabic language and means 'sheepskin' and as a consequence refers to the cavalry. The most comfortable saddles where made of sheepskin. It is interesting to note that in the year 1510 the word 'Basaner' meant 'skin'. There were leather factories around Ussel and it is believed that the name originates from there.
